Hip Replacement, Dearborn and Farmington Hills, MI

Dearborn and Farmington Hill, Michigan, is home to our esteemed doctor/surgeon, Dr. Joseph Finch, who directs and sees patients daily at Michigan Orthopedic Specialists. Our doctor is highly skilled, experienced, licensed, and board-certified in total hip replacements. Our doctor wants to explain the importance of physical therapy after a total hip replacement procedure.

Physical Therapy After Hip Replacement

You may think that because you had your hip replaced, you can immediately do all the things you could not do before your replacement. You will find it difficult to turn and reposition yourself in bed/sit up/get into and out of bed/and walk.

Michigan Orthopedic Specialists in Dearborn and Farmington Hills, Michigan, explain that hip replacements require intensive physical therapy to help you return to your normal activities and more. Therapy is necessary to help you strengthen your hip and leg to optimum function.

You will have a recovery and healing period of six to eight weeks. Exercise is vital during this time. You will experience short-term surgical pain that our doctor can help control. Recovery can take three months and up to one year for total recovery. You may be unable to resume certain activities, such as running, due to extreme pressure on the new hip joint.

Having a new hip means exercising your hip/leg through a well-structured physical therapy program that teaches exercises to help your new hip work to optimum function. Physical therapy helps you to return to normal function sooner. Hip replacement surgery is huge, and you will find some difficulty moving around after the procedure, which is why physical therapy should start soon after surgery.

You may be discharged home or to a sub-acute rehabilitation facility for intense physical therapy. Depending on your situation, licensed therapists provide physical therapy,

  • In the hospital
  • At home
  • As an outpatient
  • In a rehabilitation facility.

After your hip replacement, physical therapy starts slowly with gentle exercises to enhance your range of motion. No matter where physical therapy is provided, its goal for you is to always help you regain your normal function and movement safely. Without intense physical therapy, you will not regain normal function.

Physical therapy ensures an increased range of motion, strength, and function, so you can return to all the activities you usually did before your surgery.
